Terms
of Service.

Last updated · May 20, 2026

Roux is a recipe management app made by Paul Bernius (“we,” “us,” or “Roux”). These Terms govern your use of Roux, set out what you can expect from us, and what we expect from you.

We've tried to keep them as readable as we could. If anything is unclear, email us at hello@tryroux.app.

1. The short version

  • You sign in with email and a password, or with Sign in with Apple.
  • The recipes you save are yours. You can delete any recipe, or your whole account, from inside the app at any time.
  • Roux uses AI to extract recipes and to power the in-app chat. AI output can be wrong. You're responsible for what you cook — especially anything involving allergens.
  • Roux is free today, with usage limits (currently 5 recipe imports per calendar month) shown to you inside the app. Paid features may come later.
  • Don't import content you don't have the right to import.
  • Texas law governs these Terms; disputes go to courts in Texas. No arbitration, no class actions, with a small-claims carve-out and a 60-day cool-off first.

2. Who we are

Roux is an independent app developed and operated by Paul Bernius. For questions about these Terms:

  • Email: hello@tryroux.app
  • App: Roux: AI Recipe Assistant (iOS), bundle identifier com.paulbernius.roux
  • Privacy: see our Privacy Policy for how we handle your data.

3. Who can use Roux

Age. You must be at least 13 to use Roux. If your country requires you to be older to use online services or to enter a contract, that older age applies to you. If you're under the age of majority where you live, your parent or guardian must agree to these Terms on your behalf.

Account creation. You can create an account with an email address and a password (minimum 8 characters) or with Sign in with Apple. We require you to confirm your email address before you can sign in for the first time.

Account security. You're responsible for the activity on your account and for keeping your password confidential. Tell us if you think your account has been accessed without your permission.

One account per person. Don't share your account credentials with anyone else.

Account deletion. You can delete your account at any time from the Profile screen. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what happens to your data when you do.

4. The service

Today, Roux lets you:

  • Import a recipe by pasting a URL or text.
  • Manually create a recipe.
  • Edit any recipe by hand or by chatting with an AI assistant.
  • Search across your collection by keyword and meaning (semantic search).
  • Organize recipes with tags.

Usage limits. Roux currently includes a monthly cap on imports and chats — the free plan allows 5 recipe imports per calendar month. You can see your current usage at any time inside the app. We may change these limits with reasonable notice.

Paid features. Roux is free today. We may introduce paid features, subscriptions, or in-app purchases in the future. Any such offerings will be billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play and governed by their respective payment terms, plus any additional terms shown to you at the point of purchase. We reserve the right to change pricing, features, or availability of any free or paid tier with reasonable notice.

Availability. Roux is provided as an evolving service. We may add, change, or remove features. We may have outages. We may discontinue Roux with reasonable notice. We aim to keep Roux running but we don't guarantee any particular uptime.

5. Your content

What “Your Content” means. Your Content is the recipes, ingredients, instructions, tags, profile information, chat messages, and any text or URLs you supply to Roux.

You own it. You retain ownership of Your Content. We don't claim any ownership of it.

License to run the app. To operate Roux for you, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, transmit, process (including via AI extraction), reformat for display, and cache Your Content. This license exists for the sole purpose of providing and improving the service, and it ends when you delete the content — subject to the shared-cache exception in the next paragraph.

Shared extraction cache. When you paste a publicly-accessible URL, the structured recipe Roux extracts from that page is stored in a server-side cache keyed by the URL. This cache is shared across users — anyone else who pastes the same URL receives the same cached result. The cached entry is derived from the third-party page (not from your account) and is not deleted when you delete your account. This is described in our Privacy Policy.

Deletion behavior. When you delete a recipe, we delete it from your account, along with the image we re-hosted for it. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, your recipes, the images we hosted for you, and your search-log rows, as described in our Privacy Policy.

Feedback. If you send us suggestions or feedback about Roux, we can use them without obligation to you.

6. AI-generated output

Roux uses AI (currently Anthropic's Claude) to extract structured recipes from URLs and text, to power the in-app recipe chat, and to support semantic search. When you use the chat feature, you're talking to an AI, not a person.

AI output may be wrong. Extracted recipes can contain inaccurate amounts, missing or incorrect ingredients (including allergens), wrong or unsafe instructions, mistaken cook times or temperatures, or content that doesn't match the source. Roux makes no warranty that AI output is accurate, complete, or fit for any purpose.

You're responsible for verifying AI output before you rely on it, cook from it, serve it, or share it — especially anything related to allergens, ingredient identity, quantities, temperatures, or safe handling.

We don't train AI models on your content. We don't use your saved recipes, chat messages, pasted text, or pasted URLs to train Anthropic's models or any other AI model. Our third-party AI providers (Anthropic, Voyage AI) likewise do not use API inputs to train their models under our commercial terms.

Other users may receive similar output. Because the URL extraction cache is shared, a different user who pastes the same URL can receive identical or substantially similar extracted output. AI output for the same input is not unique to you.

7. Importing content from third parties

When you paste a URL or text, you direct Roux to fetch and process that content on your behalf.

Your representations. By submitting content, you represent that: (a) you have the right to submit it; (b) you have the right to direct Roux to fetch, parse, store, and display structured data derived from it for your personal use; (c) your submission doesn't violate the third-party site's terms or applicable law; and (d) you will use any extracted recipe only for your personal, non-commercial use (your own cooking, your own kitchen).

Public-web framing. Roux acts as a tool that fetches publicly-accessible web pages at your direction and applies AI to extract factual, structured data (ingredient lists, functional cooking steps, times). Roux does not endorse, verify, or claim ownership of source content. Where you share what you cooked from an imported recipe, please credit the original author.

Copyright complaints. If you believe content available through Roux infringes your copyright, email hello@tryroux.app with: (1) a description of the work; (2) where Roux is making the allegedly infringing material available (for example, the source URL); (3) your contact information; and (4) a statement that you believe the use is not authorized. We'll investigate promptly. We may remove or disable access to material that we determine in good faith to be infringing, and we may terminate accounts of users we determine to be repeat infringers. We are not currently registered as a DMCA Designated Agent under 17 U.S.C. §512.

8. Acceptable use

When you use Roux, you agree not to:

  • Use Roux to violate any law, any third-party right, or another person's privacy.
  • Scrape, crawl, harvest, mass-download, or otherwise extract data from Roux by automated means, except as we expressly permit.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to discover the source code of Roux, except to the extent the law explicitly allows.
  • Use Roux to circumvent paywalls, technical access controls, or rate limits on third-party sites.
  • Submit malware, scripts, or content designed to interfere with Roux or with other users.
  • Impersonate any person or misrepresent your affiliation with anyone.
  • Use Roux to harass, threaten, defame, or harm others.
  • Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of any part of Roux without our prior written permission.
  • Resell, sublicense, rent, lease, or commercially exploit Roux or its content.
  • Use Roux to develop or train a competing product or service.
  • Submit content you don't have the right to submit, including content that infringes someone's intellectual property.
  • Submit content that is illegal, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or that exploits minors.

9. Health, nutrition, and food safety

Roux is not a medical, nutrition, or food-safety service. Nothing in Roux is medical, nutritional, dietary, allergen, or food-safety advice.

Nutrition values are estimates. Nutrition information shown in Roux is calculated from USDA FoodData Central and AI-extracted ingredient amounts. It is provided for general information only and may be materially inaccurate due to ingredient matching, unit conversion, brand variation, and AI extraction errors.

Do not rely on Roux for allergen avoidance, for managing medical conditions (including diabetes, celiac disease, food allergies, or eating disorders), or for any decision affecting your health. Always read original packaging, verify ingredients independently, and consult a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian.

Cooking risks. Cooking involves heat, sharp tools, electrical and gas appliances, and the risk of foodborne illness. You assume all risk of harm arising from your use of recipes obtained through Roux, including any harm caused by reliance on AI-extracted ingredients, instructions, times, or temperatures.

10. Disclaimers, warranty, and liability

AS IS. Roux is provided on an “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” basis, with all faults. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and any warranty arising from course of dealing or usage of trade. We do not warrant that Roux will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that AI output will be accurate, current, or complete.

Liability cap. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for all claims arising out of or relating to Roux is limited, in the aggregate, to one hundred U.S. dollars (US $100). This cap applies in the aggregate to all claims of any kind.

Excluded damages. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, data, goodwill, or business opportunity, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Indemnification. You will defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Paul Bernius and Roux from and against any third-party claim, damage, loss, or expense (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of (a) Your Content, (b) your use of Roux, (c) your violation of these Terms, or (d) your violation of any law or third-party right.

Consumer-rights savings clause. Nothing in these Terms limits any right you have under mandatory consumer-protection law in your country or state of residence (including in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia, and California). Where any provision of these Terms is invalid or unenforceable under such law, only that provision is affected, and only to the minimum extent required.

11. Termination

You may stop using Roux and delete your account at any time from the Profile screen.

We may suspend or terminate your access at any time, with or without notice, if you violate these Terms, if your use creates risk or possible legal exposure for us or for our users, or if continued provision of the service to you becomes impractical (for example, if we discontinue Roux).

Effect of termination. On termination, your license to use Roux ends and we will delete your account data as described in our Privacy Policy. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including the content license to the extent it covers already-cached extractions (Section 5), disclaimers and liability limits (Section 10), indemnification (Section 10), the Apple App Store terms (Section 12), and dispute resolution (Section 13) — survive.

12. Apple App Store terms

This Section applies to your use of Roux on Apple devices and only if you obtained Roux from the Apple App Store. To the extent of any conflict between this Section and the rest of these Terms, this Section controls for App Store users.

  • Acknowledgment. These Terms are between you and Roux only, and not with Apple Inc. or its subsidiaries. Apple is not responsible for Roux or its content. Your use of Roux must comply with the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
  • Scope of license. Your license to use Roux on Apple-branded products is non-transferable and limited to use on devices you own or control, as permitted by the Apple Media Services Terms (including Family Sharing, volume purchase, and Apple Legacy Contact access).
  • Maintenance and support. We are solely responsible for any maintenance and support services for Roux. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support.
  • Warranty. We are solely responsible for any product warranties for Roux, whether express or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. In the event Roux fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of Roux (if any) to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to any warranty are our sole responsibility.
  • Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing your or any third party's claims relating to Roux, including (a) product-liability claims; (b) any claim that Roux fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement; and (c) claims under consumer-protection, privacy, or similar legislation.
  • Intellectual property. In the event of any third-party claim that Roux or your use of it infringes that party's intellectual-property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge of any such claim.
  • Legal compliance. You represent and warrant that (a) you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or that has been designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country; and (b) you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Developer name and address. For complaints, inquiries, or claims regarding Roux, contact us at hello@tryroux.app.
  • Third-party terms. You must comply with applicable third-party terms when using Roux (for example, the terms of your wireless data plan).
  • Third-party beneficiary. You acknowledge that Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms, and that upon your acceptance of these Terms, Apple has the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.

13. Changes, governing law, and disputes

Changes. We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll change the “Last updated” date at the top, and — for material changes — we'll give you reasonable advance notice in the app or by email. If you don't agree to the updated Terms, your remedy is to stop using Roux.

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

Informal resolution first. Before filing any lawsuit, you agree to send a written notice to hello@tryroux.app describing your claim and giving us 60 days to try to resolve it informally and in good faith.

Venue. After the informal-resolution period, any lawsuit must be filed in the state or federal courts located in the State of Texas, and you and Roux consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

Jury trial waiver. To the maximum extent permitted by law, you and Roux each waive any right to a trial by jury.

Small-claims carve-out. You may bring an individual action in small-claims court in your county of residence (or your country's nearest equivalent), and that forum is preferred for low-value disputes.

No class actions. You and Roux each agree to bring claims against the other only in your or our individual capacity, and not as a plaintiff or class member in any purported class or representative action. This does not apply where prohibited by law.

EU / UK / Switzerland users. Nothing in this Section overrides any mandatory right you have under the consumer-protection law of your country of residence to bring proceedings before, or rely on the protections of, the courts of your home country.

14. Miscellaneous and contact

  • Severability. If any provision of these Terms is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
  • Entire agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about Roux and supersede any prior agreements on the same subject.
  • Assignment. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them to a successor in connection with a merger, sale, or reorganization of our business.
  • Waiver. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it.
  • Force majeure. Neither party is liable for delays or failures caused by events beyond reasonable control (for example, outages, war, pandemic, or regulatory action).
  • Electronic notices. We may send notices to the email address associated with your account.

Contact. For any question, request, or complaint about these Terms, email hello@tryroux.app.
